Uber, Pony.ai and Verne launched supervised autonomous rides through UberX and Comfort in selected parts of Zagreb, creating Uber's first European autonomous-vehicle booking service. A licensed operator remains inside each vehicle during the initial phase, so this is not yet evidence of fully driverless operation. Pony.ai supplies the driving system, Verne owns and operates the fleet, and Uber handles dispatch and the customer interface. The launch provides real European deployment evidence and tests Uber's partner-led model, but fleet size, service density, utilization, pricing, operating costs and unit economics were not disclosed. Safety events, regulatory changes, liability allocation and dependence across three partners could keep the service small or uneconomic. Rafael will put scale before story by watching approval to remove operators, service-area and fleet expansion, intervention and safety disclosures, dense utilization and economics after the introductory deployment.
